Robert D. Kaplan

Robert David Kaplan is an author and analyst whose work focuses on global politics, foreign affairs, and travel journalism. Over three decades, his reporting and essays have been featured in major publications including The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Foreign Affairs. He is widely recognized for his 1994 article 'The Coming Anarchy,' which analyzed contemporary global conflicts through the lens of cultural and historical tensions that reemerged following the Cold War.

Kaplan has held significant roles within prominent research and advisory organizations. He served as a Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security and was the chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor between 2012 and 2014. In 2009, he was appointed by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to the Defense Policy Board, a federal advisory committee for the United States Department of Defense. He later joined the Eurasia Group as a senior advisor in 2017.

Throughout his career, Kaplan has received recognition for his contributions to geopolitical thought, including being named one of the 'top 100 global thinkers' by Foreign Policy magazine in 2011 and 2012. He was appointed as the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 2020. Additionally, he serves as a Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin.
