Anne Applebaum is a staff writer for The Atlantic and a senior fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. Her journalistic career includes editorial positions at The Economist and The Spectator, as well as a tenure on the editorial board of The Washington Post from 2002 to 2006.
As a historian, Applebaum has published several works regarding the political evolution of Eastern Europe. Her 2003 publication, Gulag: A History, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Her research frequently examines the history of authoritarianism and the transition of post-communist states.
Applebaum holds dual American and Polish citizenship, having attained the latter in 2013. In addition to her writing and academic fellowships, she has contributed to various international research projects focused on disinformation and the preservation of democratic institutions.
