Joseph Samuel Nye Jr. was a prominent political scientist who served as the Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. A faculty member at Harvard since 1964, he achieved the rank of University Distinguished Service Professor, emeritus. Throughout his career, Nye held significant advisory roles within the United States government, including appointments to the Foreign Affairs Policy Board by Secretary of State John Kerry and membership on the Defense Policy Board.

Nye is widely recognized for his foundational contributions to international relations theory. Alongside Robert Keohane, he co-founded the theory of neoliberalism and developed the concepts of asymmetrical and complex interdependence, notably explored in their 1977 work 'Power and Interdependence.' He is further credited with pioneering the theory of 'soft power' and the concept of 'smart power,' which involves the strategic combination of hard and soft power elements. His theoretical frameworks significantly influenced the foreign policy approaches of the Clinton and Obama administrations.

Nye's academic impact was documented by the 2011 Teaching, Research, and International Policy survey, which ranked him as the sixth most influential international relations scholar over a 20-year period. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a foreign fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy. In recognition of his intellectual contributions, he was frequently cited by Foreign Policy magazine as a top global thinker and one of the most influential figures in American foreign policy.
