Atul Gawande is an American surgeon and public-health researcher. He practises general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

From 2022 to 2025 he served as Assistant Administrator for Global Health at the United States Agency for International Development. He is the author of Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto and Being Mortal, and founded Ariadne Labs, a centre for health systems innovation.
