Patrick Pouyanné

A French business executive and engineer who serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of TotalEnergies.

Pouyanné began his professional career in 1989 at the French Ministry of Industry. Between 1993 and 1997, he held various advisory positions within the French government, serving as a technical advisor to Prime Minister Édouard Balladur and as chief of staff to the Minister of Information Technology and Space, François Fillon.

He joined the energy firm Total in 1997, initially holding managerial positions in Angola and Qatar. He later served as the senior vice president of strategy, business development, and R&D in the exploration and production division. In 2012, he was appointed president of the refining and chemicals department and became a member of the group’s executive committee.

Following the death of Christophe de Margerie in 2014, Pouyanné was appointed as the chief executive officer and president of the executive committee. He assumed the additional role of chairman of the board of directors in 2015. Under his leadership, the company underwent a rebranding to TotalEnergies in 2021 to reflect a shift toward a broader energy portfolio.
