Mark Rutte

Mark Rutte assumed the office of Secretary General of NATO in October 2024. Prior to this international appointment, he served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, becoming the longest-serving head of government in Dutch history. His political career began in 2002 when he entered the cabinet of Jan Peter Balkenende following a professional tenure in business management at Unilever.

Throughout his domestic career, Rutte led the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) from 2006 to 2023. He presided over four consecutive coalition governments, navigating various legislative sessions and record-length formation periods. His leadership was characterized by the management of diverse political alliances and fiscal negotiations within the Dutch parliamentary system.

In his capacity as Prime Minister, he oversaw the first Dutch cabinet to complete a full four-year term since 1998 during his second ministry. His transition to the role of NATO Secretary General followed the conclusion of his caretaker government in July 2024. His tenure in national politics concluded after twenty-two years of service in both executive and legislative capacities.
