Mario Monti (born 1943 in Varese) is an Italian economist and academic. He served as Prime Minister of Italy from November 2011 to April 2013, leading a technocratic government during the euro-area sovereign debt crisis, and has been a Senator for Life since 2011.
He was European Commissioner for the Internal Market from 1995 to 1999 and for Competition from 1999 to 2004, where he took landmark antitrust decisions, including the prohibition of the GE–Honeywell merger and the record fine imposed on Microsoft.
A professor of economics for most of his career, he was Rector (1989–1994) and then President (1994–2010) of Bocconi University in Milan, of which he is President Emeritus. He founded the European think tank Bruegel and has chaired international commissions for the European Union, including the 2010 report on the relaunch of the Single Market.
