Jens Stoltenberg
A Norwegian economist and politician who has served as Prime Minister of Norway, Secretary General of NATO, and Minister of Finance.
Jens Stoltenberg began his political career as the leader of the Workers' Youth League from 1985 to 1989. He entered government service as a State Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment in 1990 before being elected to the Storting in 1993. His early ministerial roles included serving as Minister of Industry and Energy and his first term as Minister of Finance from 1996 to 1997.
He served two terms as the Prime Minister of Norway, first from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2005 to 2013. During his tenure, he led the Norwegian Labour Party and focused on social democratic economic policies. In 2014, he was appointed as the 13th Secretary General of NATO, a position he held until 2024 through four term extensions.
During his time at NATO, the alliance expanded its presence in Eastern Europe and increased defense spending among member states. Following the conclusion of his international mandate, he returned to Norwegian domestic politics. In February 2025, he was reappointed as the Minister of Finance of Norway.
