Sir John Sawers 於 1977 年加入 Foreign and Commonwealth Office。在職業生涯早期，他曾被派駐也門、敘利亞、南非及美國擔任外交職務。他於 1993 年至 1995 年擔任外交大臣首席私人秘書，隨後於 2001 年至 2003 年出任英國駐埃及大使。
2003 年至 2007 年間，他擔任 Foreign and Commonwealth Office 政治事務總監。2007 年，他獲委任為英國常駐聯合國代表，代表英國出席聯合國安全理事會。2009 年，他被任命為 Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) 首長，並擔任該職至 2014 年。
從政府退休後，他轉往私營機構發展。他於 2015 年獲委任為 BP 非執行董事，並擔任 Newbridge Advisory 執行主席。他亦是 Chatham House 高級顧問，並參與多個國際安全論壇。
