Sir John Sawers 勒 1977 年加入 Foreign and Commonwealth Office。勒伊早期职业生涯里，伊先后勒也门、叙利亚、南非搭美国担任外交职务。1993 年到 1995 年，伊担任外交大臣首席私人秘书，之后勒 2001 年到 2003 年担任英国驻埃及大使。
2003 年到 2007 年，伊担任 Foreign and Commonwealth Office 政治总监。2007 年，伊被任命为英国常驻联合国代表，勒联合国安理会代表英国。2009 年，伊被任命为 Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) 局长，一直任职到 2014 年。
从政府部门退休以后，伊进入了私营部门。2015 年，伊被任命为 BP 嘅非执行董事，并担任过 Newbridge Advisory 嘅执行主席。伊还是 Chatham House 嘅高级顾问，并参加了各种国际安全论坛。
